Thank you for this thoughtful and well-documented post. It made me think not only about what children lose when parents are distracted by their screens, but also about what children learn from watching that behavior.

If kids grow up seeing their parents on screens much of the day, what does that do to their own relationship with screens and social media as they get older? Yes, the algorithms are powerful and designed to pull them in — but that cannot be the whole story. Children also learn by modeling the adults around them.

I just very recently relocated from Aspen to Oregon. I lived there for 26 years. This had become an astounding realization/observation for me too. Really no matter where I was in the valley. Parents staring at their phones while their kids wanted their attention. I don't know if this is the case everywhere, but it seemed particularly prevalent there for some reason. The message these kids are getting is concerning for sure.
